Solar cookers in developing countries

چکیده

Ferdinand Kroon In the 70ties deforestation in developing countries was mainly attributed to the use of firewood in domestic energy supply. In many developing countries the majority of the population cooks on firewood. In response, many (Western) organisations developed new technology like improved versions of traditional cook stoves, biogas plants and solar cookers. While in urban areas the commercial market for wood and charcoal is directly linked to deforestation in these regions, household firewood use is no longer seen as a major cause for deforestation in rural areas. This, and the failure of many solar cooking projects have resulted in reduction of subsidies by local governments (like India who has the largest number of solar cookers), international donors and NGO’s. However, many (small) Western NGO’s are still very dedicated to the goal of introducing solar cookers in developing countries.

Modeling, testing, and parametric analysis of a parabolic solar cooking system with heat storage for indoor cooking

Background: In an ever-changing world where needs increase daily due to economic growth and demographic progression, where prices are unstable, where reserves are running out, where climate change is topical, the energy issues are increasingly marked by the question of sustainability. In many developing countries, wood and subsidized butane are the main sources of energy used for cooking in hou...

Using renewable energy technologies for domestic cooking in India: a methodology for potential estimation

An attempt has been made to estimate the potential of using biogas plants, solar cookers and improved cookstoves for domestic cooking in India. Based on 1991 statistics on the bovine population and ownership pattern, the potential number of family size biogas plants comes out to be around 38 million in the optimistic scenario whereas, in the realistic scenario it is around 29 million. The poten...

A vacuum tube based improved solar cooker

A new type of improved solar cooker based upon the use of a single vacuum tube is presented in this paper. The proposed cooker utilizes a solar collector consisting of parallel plane rectangular glass mirror strips mounted inside a wooden frame and requiring one dimensional solar tracking through a common driver. The proposed design can be either installed over the roof top of a house or near a...

Can solar cooking save the forests?

Cooking with the sun has become a potentially viable substitute for fuelwood in food preparation in much of the developing world. Fuelwood scarcity is a growing problem that has thus far been poorly addressed. Solar cooking is one possible solution but its acceptance has been limited partially due to cultural barriers, relatively high start-up costs, and a lack of continued support subsequent t...
